Rail-Trail Acquisitions
On Track
The
Iowa Trails Council, long noted for its acquisition of railroad rights-of-way
for conversion to trails in Iowa, is currently finalizing negotiations
with the Union Pacific Railroad to acquire five more abandoned rail segments
that are expected to become major links in the Iowa rail-trail system.
These five acquisitions total 71.5 miles and represent another
900 acres being added as recreation land for public use.
The total miles of railroad rights-of-way acquired in Iowa for trail conversion
since the Iowa Trails Council declared its intention to promote this concept
in 1984 is now only a few miles short of 800, an average of more than 35
miles for each year since the ITC was founded.
Trail with No
Name?
Linn
County Trails Council would like to to come up with a name for the potential
trail from Cedar Rapids to Mount Vernon-Lisbon Suggested thus
far: Lincoln Trail after the old US 30 Lincoln Highway and Green Mountain
Trail for Mount Vernon (green mountain).
Have a name to suggest? Send it to ITC.
The ADT On the
Run
Brian
Stark, who was the leader of the group of four driving across the nation
along the American Discovery Trail a few year ago to publicize the coast-to-coast
trail, was running on the ADT route in Iowa during June.
He wants to run across every state where the ADT passes. One at a
time.
Stark is from Tucson, AZ. He is married with one child and another
on the way. His wife is a teacher so she can hold things down while
he runs each summer.
He averaged 30 to 40 miles a day in Iowa with a pack on his back. The contents
are all that he has, including a tent, so that he can camp along the trail
if necessary. |
